Simon Chavez Annual Baseball Scholarship


The Santa Barbara Grizzlies Baseball Group announced they will provide an annual scholarship for an active player in the Grizzlies summer program. This scholarship will be in the memory of student-athlete and former Santa Barbara High School baseball coach, Simon Chavez.  The scholarship will embody Simon's passion for baseball and his giving and caring spirit for others.

The Simon Chavez Scholarship will provide financial assistance for the player that exudes sportsmanship, high character, team-work and passion for learning on and off the field.

"Simon was a happy warrior. Always a smile on his face and willing to do whatever he could to help the team. He was always team first. He played and coached with humility and humor. 2015 Grizzlies 18U Simon Chavez Recipient

Samsun Keithley-Santa Barbara HS Class of 2016 has been a part of the Grizzlies program for the past two summers. Samsum is a talented young catcher for the Santa Barbara Dons and Head Coach Donovan Warrecker.  Outside of Samsun's love for baseball, he is very passionate about photography, video shooting and editing.  This past summer Samsun was invited to participate in creating a promotional video with for Athletes for Life (AFL) at Redlands College. Working with seven other team members, the group shot film and edited video for five days. Samsun enjoys indepedent music, spending time with his family and visiting the Joshua Tree National Park during his spring breaks.  




Joe Osegura-Lompoc HS Class of 2015 has been part of the Grizzlies program since the summer of 2014. Joe was a member of the Grizzlies HS team and attended the UCSB Team Camp last winter.  This past summer Joe pitched for the Santa Barbara Grizzlies Collegiate Team.  Joe was a 3-sport athlete for Lompoc HS for his 4 years.  He excelled in football, basketball and baseball. Joe will attend Santa Barbara City College for the Fall of 2015 and will take his talents to the Vaqueros baseball team and Head Coach Jeff Walker.  Joe enjoys spending his free time with his family. Other hobbies include fast-cars.
