Coastal Cubs Collegiate 2016 Crowned Premier League Champions

It was not any longer than two weeks ago that the Coastal Cubs Collegiate team was looking up the standings and sitting several games under .500.  Coach Roderick Hutchinson and Lou Lucca rallied the team playing tremendous baseball as a group, winning 11 of their last 13 games.  The Coastal Cubs had to play several games on the road with limited amount of rest and pitching resources.  "Our guys answered the bell and showed great grit and determination.  Every player on the roster contributed and this was a fabulous show of team chemistry.  I believe these young men will benefit from this experience long-term." said Head Coach Roderick Hutchinson.

The Coastal Cubs played the majority of their home games this past summer at Westmont College and will look to return in 2017.

The coaches are pleased with their recent success on the field and now are fast at work putting together another competitive roster for 2017.  If you have interest in playing for the Coastal Cubs Collegiate team in 2017, please email with your contact information and baseball resume.

Santa Barbara Grizzlies Baseball Group and the Community

The Santa Barbara Grizzlies enter their final months of the summer season and completion of their 5th year of baseball development.  The Grizzlies are a local baseball development program that provides year around training and competition for youth, high school and collegiate level players.  The Grizzlies coaching staff is comprised of former professional players, college and high school coaches.

Success on and off the field takes contributions of many people.  The Grizzlies are active in community out-reach and rely on local support and private donations.  In 2016 the Grizzlies participated in the Santa Barbara annual 5K Community Run.  The 5K race included local running enthusiasts and members from the SBCC and Santa Barbara High School baseball programs.

For the past two years the Grizzlies program has provided scholarships for players of need and for those who excel in the classroom.  The scholarship fund is in memory of Simon Chavez, former Santa Barbara Don baseball player.  With the support of the Chavez family and other members of the community, the Grizzlies program have helped families of need and have off-set annual budgetary needs.

In 2016 the Grizzlies offered to the local community a Father's Day Baseball Raffle providing four box seats at Petco Park. There was plenty of local participation in the raffle for the San Diego Padre tickets.  The eventual winner was local businessman and Big West baseball umpire, Alan Williams.

The Santa Barbara Grizzlies Baseball Group is a non-profit organization that provides opportunities for youth, high school and college players to improve their baseball and life-skills in a positive and constructive environment.  Our successes on and off the field are a direct reflection of community involvement and support.

Central Coast Products on National Stage

Central coast baseball has taken a back seat to the larger baseball hot-beds for many years. Los Angeles and San Diego have produced many Major League players and prominent college recruits on an annual basis.  The 2015 showcase circuit will feature 2 former teammates from the central coast, now both making a name for themselves in front of Major League scouts across the country.  Right-handed pitcher Kevin Gowdy from Santa Barbara High School and Outfielder Avery Tuck of Steele Canyon High School in San Diego have their early baseball roots tied in Santa Barbara, California.  Both players played youth baseball on the central coast and were teammates for the Santa Barbara Riptide, a local travel team managed by John Jensen Sr.  The Riptide was a local youth all-star team that traveled outside of Santa Barbara for development purposes.  "It has been a privilege to coach Kevin and Avery in their early years of baseball.  They are both high-character young men that have worked hard and have taken the right steps in their development plan.  The Riptide was a great group of young hungry players that loved the game. There are several other Riptide alumni heading to college to play baseball and further their education." said former Head Coach John Jensen Jr.

Both Kevin and Avery have been selected to represent the Milwaukee Brewers Area Code Team, August 4th-9th at Blair Field in Long Beach, California. This combine will attract the scouting departments of every Major League Baseball Team.  Following the Area Codes, Kevin and Avery will represent the northern region of the United States in the Perfect Game National Showcase, August 16th at Petco Park in San Diego, California. This game once again will attract every Major League Baseball Scouting Department and will be televised on the MLB Network.  Kevin Gowdy will then continue his journey with Team USA at Cal State Fullerton August 17th-22nd for the National Team Trials.

Two small town teammates now making a name for themselves on a national stage. A coach and his dream for a young team is now seeing the fruits of his and their labor.

2015 Santa Barbara County All-City Team

Javier Jasso, Carpinteria, Sr.— The Warriors’ second baseman and lead-off hitter batted .367, with 12 RBI, 15 runs and eight stolen bases. On defense, he committed only one error. He led the team down the stretch, helping the Warriors win 5 of 7, including two wins over Malibu to earn a CIF playoff berth.

Sal Delgado, Carpinteria, Soph. — He threw back-to-back one-hitters (against Villanova and Hueneme) and also tossed a two-hitter against Bishop Diego. “He was completely trustworthy on the mound as he took his assignment of starting one game every single week of the season,” said coach Pat Cooney. Delgado batted third in the lineup and hit .302.

Luke Coffey, Dos Pueblos, Sr. — The Chargers captain was a solid performer anywhere he played on the field. He batted .354, with an on-base percentage of .405. Defensively, he posted a .908 fielding percentage. Voted the Channel League MVP, Coffey was especially big for DP down the stretch, helping the Chargers win a fourth straight league title. “When he goes, we go,” said coach Nick Katzenstein. Coffey is headed to Westmont.

Dustin Demeter, Dos Pueblos, Jr. — He led the Chargers in hits with 32, including 10 doubles, and drove in 20 runs. Demeter batted .333 and had a slugging percentage of .495. “He is a clutch hitter and helps lead the offense with his cousin, Luke,” said coach Katzenstein.

Darby Naughton, Dos Pueblos, Soph. — “Our ace on the mound,” Katzenstein said. “He has great composure for a sophomore and his desire to do well and compete is like none other. Naughton was especially tough with runners on base. He stranded 62 runners in 57 innings pitched. His record was 5-2 with a 2.08 ERA.

Gio Macias, Dos Pueblos, Jr. — The DP lead-off hitter had 29 hits, drew nine walks, scored 24 runs and batted .333. “He was our lead-off man and always got things started for us,” said Katzenstein.

Sean Nakano West, San Marcos, Sr. — A steady performer for the Royals all season. As a starting pitcher, he posted an ERA of 1.13 through 43.1 innings. At the plate, he batted .278. Nakano West will continue his career at Cal Lutheran. “He was the glue for our team on offense and defense,” coach Jacob Pepper said. “He pitched amazing all season long, gave us an opportunity to win every game he pitched in.”

Kevin Gowdy, Santa Barbara, Jr. — One of top pitchers in the area, Gowdy drew the scouts to Dons games. He struck out 72, walked only 13, posted an ERA of 1.54 and went 5-1 for the season. “As a junior this year, Kevin steadily improved throughout the season,” pitching coach Mike Cooney said of the UCLA commit. “With a bit more run support, he could have been 10-0. The Channel League coaches agreed that he was one of the league’s best pitchers. We look forward to an even more successful senior year.”

Trevor Moropoulos, Santa Barbara, Sr. — The first baseman/pitcher had a tremendous season. He led the Dons with a .354 batting average, with 22 RBI and 16 hits with runners in scoring position. He also turned in some solid pitching performances. “Trevor was unanimously voted the Dons’ MVP by his coaches, not only for his team-leading hitting and fielding but for his increased contribution as the No. 2 starting pitcher,” Cooney said. “By season’s end, Trevor was hitting with power to all fields and pitching into the late innings of every start.”

Bryce Morison, Santa Barbara, Sr. — The leader of the Dons infield, the shortstop made several outstanding plays with his glove. His fielding average was .910. “His quiet leadership at shortstop was his greatest contribution to the Dons’ exceptional defense, diving for grounders, leaping for line drives and ranging well into the outfield for pop flies,” Cooney said. “He is well-positioned to succeed at the college level, but will be difficult for us to replace."

Grizzlies Players Headed to the Next Level

November 4, 2014

Santa Barbara Grizzlies players are making noise throughout the country.  Three former Grizzlies players will take their game to the Division I level.  2 members have patrolled the outfield for the Grizzlies and the Southern California Cubs Scout Team, plus have participated in various Area Code Events in Southern California.

Senior Outfielder for Santa Barbara High School, Dalton Schroeder will attend and play baseball for Brown University of the prestigious Ivy League starting the fall of 2015.  The right handed hitting and fielding Schroeder projects as an outfielder for the Bears, with tools that can make an immediate impact for Head Coach Grant Achilles.  "Not only does Dalton possess tremendous baseball skills, he is a great teammate with exceptional make-up.  His work ethic is visible on the diamond and more importantly in the classroom.  He is an exceptional student in the classroom with a bright future in baseball", stated Jeff Salazar Director of Player Development for the Grizzlies.

Junior Avery Tuck from St. Joseph's High School in Santa Maria has verbally committed to play the Fall of 2016 for the San Diego Aztecs of the Mountain West Conference and Head Coach Mark Martinez.  Tuck has excelled on the gridiron for St Joseph's and made his mark this past summer on the baseball diamond playing in the Area Codes Underclassmen Games for the Milwaukee Brewers. "Avery is a gifted athlete that is just starting to hit his stride with baseball.  With his aptitude and athleticism, the sky's the limit. MLB scouts will be watching with keen interest the next couple of years", mentioned Jeff Salazar.  Avery will attend Steele Canyon High School the spring of 2015.

Left-hander pitcher, Joshua Tedeschi from Dos Pueblos High School is currently attending the University of Utah as a student-athlete. Joshua is currently a freshman on the Utes baseball team.   Tedeschi made an impact on the mound for the Dos Pueblos Chargers and pitched during the summer for the Santa Barbara Grizzlies and the Southern California Cubs Scout Team.

The Santa Barbara Grizzlies Baseball Group is a non-profit organization providing year around baseball instruction and competition on the Central Coast for youth, high school and college athletes.  The main goal of the Grizzlies is to provide professional instruction so that local players can develop socially and athletically while pursuing opportunities to play at the next level.
